A shared prefix is a shared cell.

Ten characters name any doorway on the planet. Each one narrows the world by twenty-five — from a block of it spanning two continents down to the step outside a front door.

Every character after the first selects one cell of a five-by-five division of the cell before it. Read the code from the left and the world closes in at a constant rate, which is what makes a prefix mean something.
